This web site includes the full text of the original book Combat History of the 8th Infantry Division in World War II as prepared and edited by Lt. Marc F. Griesbach, historian of the 8th Division at the close of World War II in 1945. As stated in the title page of the book, "this account was written during the period of combat from official reports and personal interviews with commanders and men of the Eighth Division."

It is important to clarify that I am not the original author of this publication, and that I have only transcribed this document for historical purposes. — Robert Oliver (webmaster)

It is my intent for this transcription to match the original book as closely as possible, which includes spelling and grammatical mistakes, as well as factual mistakes. The writing style reflects the author and the time in which it was written. The text of the PDF version of the book will remain exactly as it is in the original, while the HTML version will include any necessary annotations.

As the grandson of an 8th Division officer (First Lieutenant Robert A. McDonald, Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment), I started this project as a way to learn more about my grandfather's service in World War II, and as a means of preserving valuable military history for the benefit of others.

Any comments, corrections or suggestions regarding this site can be directed to Robert Oliver.
